Why Zhovtiy Klyn?
- Zhovtiy Klyn (Yellow Wedge)! What is a Zhovtiy Klyn? Why exactly Zhovtiy Klyn? – This is a usual reaction of all people opening the Main Page of our web site.
- And why not Zhovtiy Klyn?
While migrating to new lands within the Russian Empire, the Ukrainians often called the places of their dense settlement a Klyn (Wedge) wedging into the empty lands uncultivated by man. Thus, such Ukrainian enclaves as “Malynoviy Klyn” (Crimson Wedge) in the Kuban region, “Siriy Klyn” (Gray Wedge) in Kazakhstan and in the South of the Western Siberia, “Zeleniy Klyn” (Green Wedge) in the Far East, etc. appeared on the territory of Russia. Unfortunately, the Ukrainians migrating to Nyzove Nadvolzhya and creating dense places of residence did not name their new homeland. Perhaps, it was unnecessary at that time. The main occupation of the Ukrainians of Nyzove Nadvolzhya was arable farming. With the years passing by the new lands brought into cultivation by the Ukrainians became yellow and golden from the colour of fields of wheat. If our ancestors could have a look at our region, they would certainly name their land “Zhovtiy Klyn” (Yellow Wedge).
The authors of the web site hope that any person who touches even slightly the history and culture of the Ukrainians of Nyzove Nadvolzhya and hears the name “Zhovtiy Klyn” will answer that these are the lands where the Ukrainians of Nyzove Nadvolzhya live.
